Iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU-B1 review

Iiyama pitches the 24in ProLite XB2483HSU-B1 at design and imaging professionals, but the quality of this 24in display gives it much wider appeal.

As we’ve come to expect from Iiyama’s professional-range monitors, build quality is excellent. The screen’s sturdy stand provides 130mm of height adjustment, swivel and tilt, and can be rotated to portrait mode. The monitor also has a built-in USB hub with two ports on the left-hand side, which is useful if you keep your PC on the floor; the lack of USB3 means you won’t be able to take advantage of high-speed external drives, though. The built-in adjustment buttons and the on-screen display are very easy to use, which will be appreciated by those who like to tweak a screen to their exact specification.

There are DVI and HDMI connectors on the rear, as well as a VGA port. The screen also has a pair of 5-watt speakers, but as ever these do not deliver sound suitable for anything beyond basic speech and should not be considered as a replacement for desktop speakers or a proper sound system.

Iiyama says the XB2483HSU-B1 has one of its new AMVA+ panels, which are meant to have improved contrast levels, colour accuracy and viewing angles over standard MVA models.

The XB2483HSU performed reasonably in our calibration tests. It was able to display 94.1 per cent of the sRGB colour gamut out of the box. After calibration, we could only get this to improve slightly to 94.6 per cent. This is short of the Business Buy-winning BenQ BL2410PT which, after calibration, was able to display 99.9 per cent of the sRGB colour gamut.

Our black level tests saw just 0.09cd/m2 of light coming through from the display’s backlight, which is a tiny amount of leakage. This led to very deep blacks, and helped with the screen’s high measured 2948:1 contrast ratio.

The monitor performed well in our subjective image tests. The combination of a fair level of colour accuracy and high contrast levels resulted in our test photographs showing off a great deal of detail, with even darker spots of the images retaining most of their subtle details. The same was true of the lighter areas of the screen, where plenty of detail was still visible even when white was the predominant colour. Solid colours were vibrant, with reds, blues and greens all uniformly bright.

Viewing angles were also wide; we saw no major contrast shift until we were nearly side-on with the screen, so under normal use you’ll have no problems at all.

The Iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU-B1 is a fine all-round monitor; it has sturdy build quality paired with a reasonable-quality panel. It misses out on an award, however, as it still has some stiff competition from the year-old BenQ BL2410PT, which has many similar features including a portrait mode, has significantly better colour accuracy and is now around the same price as Iiyama’s screen.
