IKEA Volmar review

The Ikea Volmar is the company’s high-end executive chair, with a leather finish. It looks nice and sitting into the creaking leather certainly feels good.

The basic model comes without arms, but if you want a set of height adjustable models, you have to pay an additional £20. There’s also an optional headrest for £25, although you probably won’t need it as the seat back seemed tall enough to us.

There’s a decent range of adjustments to get the chair setup for the perfect posture. As well as standard height adjustment, there’s a control to adjust the backrest’s tilt tension. Set it right and you ease comfortably back when you’re relaxing at your desk. If you’d rather stay upright, you can lock the backrest into place.

To take into account people of different sizes, a separate lever lets you adjust the backrest depth, plus it can also be raised or lowered into five ratcheted positions. Using these range of adjustments it’s pretty easy to get the chair configured so that it’s comfortable for you.

It’s not perfect, though. We found that the leather made us quite hot, while the seat didn’t have a lot of padding and felt a bit too firm. As a result, we never felt really comfortable, no matter how much we adjusted the chair.

It looks smart and it’s a good price for a leather chair, but we’d rather either spend more on the Herman Miller Mirra or less on the Ikea Joakim.
