Advanced English Dictionary review
A comprehensive dictionary that's handy to have on your iPhone.
Although Apple made the decision not to include an English dictionary on the iPhone as standard, this has given third-party developers the opportunity to corner a market on the App Store.
As a result, there are several dictionaries to choose from, ranging from the free Dictionary.com to the much more expensive Concise Oxford English Dictionary.
This 14.3MB app is the Advanced English Dictionary from developer jDictionary Mobile. The company has some history with dictionaries for mobile devices, as it has already produced editions for BlackBerry mobiles and Symbian-based handsets.
Featuring more than 1.5 million words split across more than 250,000 entries, this is a comprehensive dictionary. Finding a word is a breeze: tap the search feature and begin typing to see a list of possible words. The more letters you enter the more refined the search, so if you don’t know the correct spelling, you can easily scroll to find it. When you click on a word, it not only gives you a brief definition, but it also reveals any synonyms and opposites, hypernyms and meronyms to link to other words.
You can also bookmark pages, enabling you to quickly find words that you commonly misspell, and you can copy and paste the words into an email ensuring your correspondence is perfect. Of the dictionary apps, we’ve looked at, we feel this is good compromise on price and features.
