Microsoft says don’t do homebrew NoDo Windows Phone 7 update
Please be patient for cut-and-paste, says company
Windows Phone 7 launched without a key feature, copy and paste, and while Microsoft has addressed this issue with the NoDo update, it’s not rolling out fast enough for some people.
Tired of waiting for the update to come through, some users have been turning to homebrew updates, manually updating their handsets to the latest version. Microsoft, isn’t so happy with this and has sent out a public warning.
“If you attempt one of these workarounds, we can’t say for sure what might happen to your phone because we haven’t fully tested these homebrew techniques. You might not be getting the important device-specific software we would typically deliver in the official update. Or your phone might get misconfigured and not receive future updates,” said Eric Hautala on the Windows Blog.
There was even a ward of warning that manually updating a phone could brick it and render warranties invalid. The upshot is that people should sit back and wait. If you’re still impatient, you can use the Where’s my phone update? site to see when your handset is due to be updated.
What kind of Windows update would be complete without a bizarre error message that prevents you from installing the features? The Blog post also covers errors 800705B4 and 80180080 for people that can’t even get the February update to install, let alone wait for the March update.
The March update also brings a more stable market place to the handset, as well as introducing cut-and-paste for the first time.
