The new Vivo V17 Pro dropped today and it has SIX cameras

Vivo may have only just announced the curved-screen Nex 3 but that hasn’t stopped them dropping yet another new device – the Vivo V17 Pro. It’s available to buy in India from today but will be making its way to other countries in the near future.

The Vivo V17 Pro is aimed at the mid-to-high end range of the market and appears to be the company’s new flagship device, which is positively stuffed full of cameras.

Interestingly, it has the same Snapdragon 675 processor as the older V15 Pro model, which was released earlier in 2019. Apart from that, though, this is a brand new all-singing, all-dancing device.

Vivo V17 Pro: Specifications and design

Specifications-wise, the Vivo V17 Pro has a standard 8GB of RAM and a bigger 4,100mAh battery. The screen is a 6.44in Super AMOLED panel, with an aspect ratio of 20:9 and, what’s nice about it is that there’s no large bezel or notch. Instead, as with previous Vivo phones, the front cameras are all hidden inside the phone’s body and rise up in a motorised pop-up from the top edge of the phone when needed. There’s also an in-display fingerprint sensor to keep the whole thing looking clean.

The V17 Pro is a little chunky and the plastic back doesn’t exactly feel premium but it’s still aesthetically pleasing with its pearlescent finish. Vivo has also managed to squeeze in a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is good and it charges via USB Type-C.

Vivo V17 Pro: Cameras

When it comes to cameras, the Vivo is rather well-equipped. On the back, you’ll find four cameras (yes, FOUR) which include a 48-megapixel main camera, one 2x 13-megapixel telephoto camera, an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera and a macro camera with the ability to focus as close as 25mm.

On the front, you’ll find two selfie cameras in the pop-up module. One is a standard 32-megapixel camera, the other is an 8-megapixel wide-angle effort, which should come in handy when capturing group selfies.

As usual with Vivo phones, there’s a healthy smattering of skin-smoothing beautification options and, if you’re interested in looking like a weird alien version of yourself, the number of other face-editing options, such as eye-widening, face slimming and jaw lengthening are quite staggering.

Finally, for the more accident-prone phone users, the phone also has a drop sensor, which automatically retracts the selfie camera if the phone falls from a height. All-in-all, the cameras are pretty impressive, even if the sheer number of them is a little overwhelming.

Vivo V17 Pro: Early verdict

We haven’t had enough time yet with the phone to pass judgement but with the price set to come in at around £300 to £350 (in India it’s 22,990 Rupees) it looks like it could be a steal.

That’s an amazing price for smartphone with not two, three or even four cameras, but SIX, notwithstanding the slightly underwhelming-looking processor and cheap-feeling plastic back. This may be one mid-price phone worth keeping an eye on.
